BEGINNERS COURSE
Starting 16th January @ The Body Garage - Wednesdays - 7-8am
Starting 17th January @ Lake Hawea Community Centre - Thursdays - timing tbc
This course is open to anyone; those new to yoga or Ashtanga, those who want build foundations to come to a led class or those who’d like confidence to start a self practice at home.
You’ll be introduced to theory and philosophy of Ashtanga, the eight limbed system, discussing why we practice and things to be aware of when starting to practice. You’ll learn the importance of the breath, why we use Ujayi breath and how to breath properly to feel the benefits of the practice. We’ll work through the sequence of the primary series beginning with Surya Namaskar A and B, working through the standing postures and seated postures up until Navasana, finishing with backbends and some of the closing sequence. We will add new postures each week as you become familiar with the sequence with modifications when necessary.
In following the sequence learning to use breath, bandha (locks) and drishti (gazing point) the practice becomes a movement meditation. Rather than focusing externally we learn to focus our attention internally. The primary series is known as 'yoga chikitsa' (yoga therapy). It has been designed using all the postures from yoga therapy and sequenced in a specific way so that each posture opens the body for the next. Through regular practice we begin to cleanse and purify the body and mind whilst building strength and flexibility in alignment.
The duration of the course is 6 Weeks. The first 4 classes will be 1 hour long, the last 2 will be 1 hour 15 minutes.
